Step into maritime history! Delimara Lighthouse opens to the public this Saturday 10th May
Guided tours will take place at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.
This Saturday 10th May, maritime enthusiasts and curious explorers alike are in for a rare treat – the beautifully restored Delimara Lighthouse will be opening its doors to the public for guided tours, thanks to the dedicated volunteers of Din l-Art Ħelwa, Malta’s National Trust.
Overlooking the popular Delimara bay, this 19th-century lighthouse is one of Malta’s most striking examples of industrial maritime heritage. First completed in 1855 under Governor Sir Richard More O’Ferrall, the lighthouse served a crucial role: guiding ships safely into Valletta’s Grand Harbour, especially those arriving from North Africa after the opening of the Suez Canal. Today, it stands as a monument to Malta’s seafaring past, and thanks to ongoing restoration efforts, it’s looking better than ever!
Visitors will be able to explore the site during three free guided tours led by Din l-Art Ħelwa Council Member Stanley Farrugia Randon, scheduled for 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. These tours will bring the story of the lighthouse to life, delving into its construction, role in navigation, and especially its unique Fresnel lens – a brilliant feat of optical engineering that revolutionised lighthouse technology.
While access to the lantern tower itself remains restricted due to safety, the experience promises to be an exciting one nonetheless. Visuals and a detailed model of the tower will be available, ensuring the event is inclusive for visitors who are visually or physically impaired.
Though participation is free of charge, donations towards the continued upkeep of the lighthouse are encouraged.
