A 15th century Maltese treasure! Explore the historic 600-year-old Bir Miftuh chapel in Gudja
It served as parish church for over 200 years.
Bir Miftuh’s chapel in Gudja is one of the best-preserved chapels from the 1400s in Malta.
It was first built and put to use all the way back in 1430, which was almost 600 year ago! Yet it is still preserved to this day.
By 1436, it was declared as a parish and served as such for 240 years. In 1676, the Gudja Parish Church was opened and replaced the chapel as the official parish of Gudja.
During the Great Siege of 1565, Turks landed in the area and tried to desecrate the chapel, but it is said the Maltese of the area hid the chapel’s treasures in the tombs of the chapel to prevent them for being stolen.
The chapel unfortunately suffered damage during the World War II air raids of 1942 but was thankfully restored soon after.
It is now under the care of ‘Din l-Art Helwa’ and opens every first Sunday of the month between 9am and 12pm.
