Step back in time! Discover the ancient art of spinning wool in Gozo this September
Heritage Malta is inviting the public to step back in time and discover the traditional craft of spinning sheep’s wool into yarn during an upcoming event in Gozo.
‘Spinning Yarn’ will take place on Saturday, 19th September, from 11am to 1pm at the Gran Castello Historic House within the Ċittadella. The event is being organised in celebration of Worldwide Spin in Public Day, an international event held every third Saturday of September to celebrate the age-old craft of spinning.
Visitors will have the opportunity to watch a skilled spinner demonstrate the traditional technique using an antique spinning wheel, offering a glimpse into how wool was transformed into yarn before modern manufacturing methods.
The experience will also be hands-on, with participants invited to try their hand at basic spinning techniques using a drop spindle. Those taking part will be able to take their finished yarn home with them, while gaining a greater appreciation for a skill that has been passed down through generations.
A question-and-answer session will also be held during the event, with participants able to ask questions in both Maltese and English.
Places are limited, so pre-booking is essential. Children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult, with the accompanying adult’s admission included in the child’s ticket.
Tickets can be booked online in advance or purchased from any Heritage Malta museum or site.
