One of the greatest treats of being on a small island is the sheer number of opportunities available to enjoy sunrise and sunset over the horizon. The entire western coast of Malta is, obviously, a great spot to enjoy a beautiful sunset. Allow me, however, to point you to the most stunning sunset spots, starting from the north-west heading south.

1. It-Torri L-Ahmar, Mellieha

The beauty to be enjoyed here is two-fold - that of the sun setting on the western cliffs, which can be reached by a short walk past the Red Tower, and that of the tower itself glowing a bright amber in the sunset glow. 

2. Popeye Village, Mellieha

Head to the pier to enjoy a great view of the sunset, as well as a perfect view of Popeye Village, with its pretty, brightly-painted, wooden buildings.

3. Ghajn Tuffieha

One of my personal favourites, Ghajn Tuffieha Bay is the perfect sunset beach - the sun can be seen setting on the horizon at each edge of the bay depending on the time of year. You can also take a walk up the clay hills towards Gnejna Bay for a truly spectacular setting.

4. Fomm ir-Rih

More breath-taking views from Fomm ir-Rih, with its majestic white cliffs surrounding the bay. This place is not easily accessible without a car, so a quiet time in nature is guaranteed - this is the perfect spot for a sunset meditation.

5. Dingli Cliffs

Here is where you feel on top of the world yet feel so small. Standing at the edge of the cliff here with nothing for miles around is awe-inspiring enough by itself; add the timeless beauty of sunset and you'll think you died and went to heaven.

6. Hagar Qim

There is more to marvel at here than just the temples. Step off the footpath taking you down from Hagar Qim to Mnajdra Temples and head towards the edge of the cliff; by the memorial, you will find a pathway down to the water's edge ... and much more than you'd bargained for.

7. Wied iz-Zurrieq

Malta's caves are one of its most remarkable features. Zurrieq offers plenty of those, including the famous Blue Grotto, creating wonderful photo opportunities with a stunning backdrop of an orange sunset against the big blue.
