Seeking an oasis of peace in the south of Malta? Head to the Garden of Serenity in Santa Lucija
A slice of Chinese philosophy in Malta!

Francesca Vella

Hidden in plain sight at the border of Santa Lucija, just a stone’s throw from Malta’s bustling airport roads, lies a peaceful retreat that feels like stepping into another world – the Garden of Serenity. This stunning Chinese public garden is a haven of tranquillity, offering visitors a chance to escape the daily rush and immerse themselves in an atmosphere of peace and reflection.

Designed by expert garden masters from the Suzhou Garden Institute in China, the Garden of Serenity was a generous gift from the People’s Republic of China to Malta. Construction began in September 1996, and it was officially inaugurated on 7th July 1997. Since then, it has remained a cherished space for relaxation and introspection.

Every element within the garden is carefully crafted with deep symbolic meaning, inspired by Chinese philosophy. As visitors walk through the garden, they pass under intricately designed porticos, representing different stages of life – birth, growth, and death. The zig-zag bridge and corridors are a reminder that life's journey is rarely straightforward, filled with twists and turns. Meanwhile, the stepping stones in the pond symbolise the challenges of spiritual and personal growth, leading toward unity with the rest of community.

Beyond its symbolism, the elegant pavilions and the calming sound of flowing water make this garden a perfect escape for quiet meditation, or simply a peaceful stroll. If you're feeling the need for a break from the fast pace of life, you’ll definitely benefit from a visit to this hidden oasis, which is open every day from 9 AM to 8 PM.

Have you ever been there?
