De La Salle College students will soon get to spend some of their lessons surrounded by nature.

Work is underway on a new nature-based learning centre within the Birgu school which will consist of three open-air classrooms in space occupied by abandoned structures that are currently being demolished.

Stone from the demolished structures will be reused to build the new classrooms.

'Classrooms will be integrated into a rehabilitated garden and students will be able to spend lessons surrounded by nature,' the school’s director, Stephen Cachia, explained.

“They will get to experience education and nature simultaneously.”

These new classrooms will also be occasionally open for the community.

The project is being funded by Project Green, with the collaboration of BirdLife Malta.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said that the integration of classrooms within a natural environment, with learning taking place in an open space, is a dream that is becoming reality and expressed hope that this project could serve as a model for other schools.
