Malta Public Transport has just announced a new addition to its Tallinja Direct services, and it’s great news for both locals and tourists trying to make their way between the airport and the north of the island.

Launching on Sunday 27th July, the new Route TD5 will offer a fast and direct connection between Malta International Airport (MIA) and Buġibba, with stops along the way in Luqa, Żebbuġ, Rabat, and St Paul’s Bay. This new route is designed to provide a more convenient and comfortable public transport option, especially for those with luggage or those looking to avoid multiple transfers.

Unlike regular bus services, Tallinja Direct routes are commercial services that aim to cut down on travel time by bypassing busy town centres. TD5 has been introduced as part of Malta Public Transport’s ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity across the island and respond to the increasing demand on existing airport services, particularly the popular Route TD1, which runs between MIA and Ċirkewwa.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Route TD5 will run six trips on weekdays and five on weekends in each direction.
  • Departures will be hourly throughout the day.
  • The service will use modern, urban buses equipped with extra seating and luggage space.
  • Prices start at €1.50 for personalised Tallinja Card holders, and €3.00 per journey when paying with cash. The route is also covered by Explore Cards.

Aside from this new route, Malta Public Transport is also making changes to two other popular routes:

  • Route 90 (Valletta–Żabbar) will now have four additional early-morning trips to better serve commuters.
  • Route 83 (Valletta–Santa Luċia) will become a circular route, improving overall coverage and frequency.

For full schedules and route maps, visit publictransport.com.mt or download the Tallinja App.

Safe travels!
