Same temperature, different feel! Here’s why Malta’s spring and autumn weather aren’t alike
Weather conditions in the Maltese Islands can feel surprisingly different depending on the season, even when temperatures are the same. According to Maltese Islands Weather, a day reaching 24–25°C in spring is not experienced in the same way as a day with identical temperatures in autumn.
In spring, temperatures often fluctuate more dramatically between day and night. After the colder winter months, the surrounding sea remains relatively cool, and humidity levels are lower due to reduced evaporation. As a result, heat escapes quickly once the sun sets, a process known as radiative cooling, causing nighttime temperatures to drop significantly. A typical spring day might see highs of 24°C but lows falling to around 13°C.
In contrast, autumn brings a much narrower temperature range. Following the long summer, the sea retains warmth, often remaining above 23°C. This stored heat is gradually released into the atmosphere, while higher humidity levels act like a blanket, trapping warmth overnight. Consequently, temperatures remain elevated, with an autumn day of 24°C often paired with a much warmer night of around 20°C.
This is why spring warmth feels fresh and comfortable, while autumn warmth can feel heavier and more lingering.
