Malta’s famous aircraft spotting platform is set for a major upgrade!

Kirkop’s local council has issued a tender for the embellishment of the public space, which includes an upgrade to the platform.

Known as the Spotters Wall, the platform offers a great view of the Malta International Airport’s main apron and runway and has long been popular with aircraft enthusiasts.

After the government handed it control of the area last year, the local council has now released a tender, complete with renders – designed by ACB Architects – showing what the site could look like.

It will include three raised platforms, with the lower one accessible by lift for people with mobility issues. The stairs and railings will be reworked, trees and shrubs will be planted, and new benches and tables will be installed.

The old aero engine and propeller, that has become symbolic of the site, will remain on site but will be slightly relocated from its current position.

Kirkop mayor Matthew Agius Zammit told GuideMeMalta that this upgrade has been in the works for several years, and it was the previous local council which got the ball rolling.

While timelines hinge on the procurement process, Mr Agius Zammit said he would like the project to be complete by 2027.

He welcomed the fact that the platform will be accessible to wheelchair users and that it will be co-funded by the Malta Airport Foundation.
