Restoration works at Valletta’s St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral to start sooner than you think!
Great news! Works to urgently restore the tower and spire of St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral in Valletta are starting soon, the Save Valletta Skyline Restoration Appeal reportedly said. We know, Malta and Valletta in particular, have a lot of cathedrals and you’re probably trying to wrap your head around which one it is. It’s the one whose spire can be seen in the pretty snapshots of Valletta.
The TLC works are part of a contract worth €3 million and have received the go ahead. It has been reported that the restoration works will kick off in the next fortnight. The first order of business is to build the secure scaffolding around the 67-metre tower and spire and to remove the six bells found at this Grade 1 cathedral.
Work is reportedly also in hand for other contracts that will help restore the exterior of the church. According to the Save the Valletta Skyline website, the total amount of funds needed for this entire project to be completed is €8 million.
So far, the appeal has reached €5.2 million consisting of €1 million “in private and corporate donations” and €4.2 million “allocated from European Union ERDF Priority Axis 5 Funding,” the website notes. “Our target aim is more than Euro 8 million by end-2021, the 175th Anniversary of the building of the Cathedral.”
