Resilience in crisis! Check out this old historic photo that shows a glimpse of WWII in Malta
A vivid moment from World War II!

The National Archives of Malta recently shared a poignant historical photo on Facebook, capturing a vivid moment from World War II.

The image shows two horse-drawn carts laden with the belongings of families fleeing Valletta, seeking shelter under the iconic arches of Portes des Bombes during an air raid.

This remarkable snapshot offers a glimpse into the resilience of the Maltese people during one of the most challenging periods in the island’s history.

Portes des Bombes, a prominent gateway near Floriana, became a place of refuge as the bombs rained down during the relentless attacks of World War II. Families, desperate to protect themselves and their possessions, often sought shelter wherever they could.

The image of these two loaded horse carts, standing still beneath the arches as war planes passed overhead, is a powerful reminder of Malta’s wartime struggles and the determination of its people to endure.

The photograph serves as a tribute to the strength and courage of the Maltese families who faced immense hardships during the war. It also underscores the importance of preserving these visual memories, helping future generations to connect with and understand their country's past.
