It’s official! Summer 2019 saw continuous record-breaking measures of heat across the Maltese Islands, with temperatures reaching 37.8°C in June and showing no signs of cooler weather on the horizon for July.
According to the Malta International Airport (MIA), temperatures recorded on 22 out of the 31 days in July this year exceeded the climate norm of 26.6°C. The maximum temp last month was recorded during the heatwave’s peak between 8th and 10th July, hitting a whopping 39.6°C (and that was the real temp and not feels-like!). Damn.
MIA also said in a statement that 5th and 20th July brought a breath of fresh air to Malta and Gozo, when temps dropped to a minimum of 21°C. And surprisingly, July wasn’t as dry as everyone expected. The Met Office at MIA recorded 0.8mm of precipitation last month, and have also reported that it was slightly windier than usual.
As expected however, July was quite bright, with 368.3 hours of sunshine recorded, which resulted in people baking in the hot weather. We know we did!
