Only travel to 'COVID-19 safe' countries will initially be permitted.
After weeks of speculation, it is being reported that authorities are aiming for a mid-July reopening of the Malta International Airport.
A source speaking to Times of Malta under the condition of anonimity confirmed this plan is expected to go ahead as long as the number of cases remains stable. This person also shared his surprise as the reopening date came sooner than expected.
Despite the good news, routes have been cut down by around a half of their original number; with Times of Malta reporting that approximately 70 out of 120 routes for this winter have been cancelled, as well as 60 of the 144 summer 2021 routes, with the MIA CEO foreshadowing a link loss between Malta and Scandinavia.
Only yesterday, it was reported that the Latvian authorities were advising against travel to Malta, slashing hopes of a Scandinavian link through safe travel corridors.
Should cases remain low and the airport reopen, air travel will not be as we knew it. Routes available will be minimal - based on safety of the destination country, and it is yet to be made clear how social distancing and other COVID-19 measures will affect passengers travelling to and from Malta.
