Public holiday fun! Step back in time with weaving & traditional crafts at Ta’ Kola Windmill
Families and craft enthusiasts are invited to step back in time at ‘Weaving & Traditional Crafts’, a special heritage event taking place on Thursday 19th March, a public holiday, from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the historic Ta’ Kola Windmill in Xagħra. Blending history, culture and hands-on creativity, the morning promises an engaging experience for visitors of all ages.
Set within one of the few surviving 18th-century windmills dating back to the Knights’ period, the event offers a unique glimpse into a time when windmills were central to village life. Participants can choose between guided tours in Maltese or English, exploring the windmill’s preserved structure and learning how these buildings once supported local communities.
A key focus of the tour is the historical importance of cotton in the Maltese Islands. Once a vital resource, cotton production shaped livelihoods, trade and domestic crafts for generations. Visitors will discover how weaving and textile-making became essential household skills, deeply woven into everyday life.
Following the tour, guests will watch a traditional weaver demonstrate time-honoured techniques before trying their hand at basic weaving themselves. The interactive workshop provides a rare opportunity to connect with ancestral crafts and appreciate the patience and skill behind handmade textiles.
