Skies aglow for 25 years! Malta International Fireworks Festival returns this April
The inclusion of a Canadian pyrotechnic company marks the first participation from outside Europe!
The Malta Tourism Authority has officially launched the 25th anniversary edition of the Malta International Fireworks Festival, marking a major milestone for one of the country’s most beloved cultural events.
Taking place between 18th and 30th April, the festival will once again illuminate the skies over the Grand Harbour and Nadur, Gozo, celebrating Malta’s rich pyrotechnic heritage while attracting visitors beyond the peak summer season.
The announcement was made at Fort St Angelo in Birgu, overlooking the Grand Harbour - one of the festival’s most iconic settings. This year’s programme brings together around 40 fireworks teams, including fireworks factories, affiliated societies, and band clubs, highlighting the depth of local talent while reinforcing the festival’s international appeal.
A key highlight of the 25th edition is the pyro-musical competition, which has expanded from six to eight competing teams. Four Maltese teams will be joined by four international competitors, including participants from countries making their festival debut. Notably, the inclusion of a Canadian pyrotechnic company marks the first participation from outside Europe, strengthening the festival’s visibility in long-haul tourism markets.
The festival opens on 18th April in Nadur, Gozo, with non-competitive pyro-musical displays, traditional fireworks, and a closing performance by last year’s winners, Għaqda Piroteknika 10 ta’ Awwissu, Birgu. Competitive displays will follow in Valletta on 20th and 25th April, before a spectacular grand finale at the Grand Harbour on 30th April.
Audiences will also enjoy a wide range of traditional Maltese fireworks, including beraq, murtali, sfejjer, and blalen, showcasing the craftsmanship that defines Malta’s festa tradition - recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
