Kuluri u Kostumi: Celebrating the artistry behind Malta’s Carnival costumes this February
At the heart of Malta’s vibrant Carnival celebrations lies an often-overlooked craft: the painstaking artistry behind the costumes that bring the streets of Valletta and Floriana to life. Kuluri u Kostumi (Colours & Costumes), an engaging exhibition at Spazju Kreattiv, shines a spotlight on the creativity, dedication, and intricate work that make these spectacular designs possible.
Running from 29th January to 22nd February 2026, the exhibition invites visitors to step beyond the music and festivities of Carnival and discover the craftsmanship that forms its foundation. From the first stitch of a needle to the final jewel carefully glued in place, each costume tells a story of patience, skill, and imagination. These pieces are not simply garments but wearable artworks, often the result of months of collaboration between volunteers, designers, and artisans.
Hundreds of costumes are displayed, revealing the vibrant colours, elaborate structures, and delicate embellishments that define Maltese Carnival. Visitors gain insight into the creative process and the complex techniques involved, appreciating the immense effort required to prepare performers for their dazzling parades. By highlighting the unseen labour behind the spectacle, Kuluri u Kostumi deepens the public’s understanding of Carnival as both a cultural celebration and a craft tradition.
Located at Spazju Kreattiv in Pjazza Kastilja, Valletta, the exhibition is open Tuesday to Friday from 9:00am to 9:00pm, and weekends from 10:00am to 9:00pm, remaining closed on Mondays.
Whether you are a long-time Carnival enthusiast or a curious newcomer, Kuluri u Kostumi offers a fresh perspective on one of Malta’s most beloved traditions, celebrating the colours, costumes, and creative spirit that define the season.
