Pfizer has started testing a new oral pill that they claim can be taken once patients start developing Covid symptoms. If the trial, which is currently in stage one, is successful, it could be the first intervention of the sort that could potentially prevent the worsening of Covid cases.

The company has said that the trial has “demonstrated potent in-vitro antiviral activity” against the virus “as well as activity against other coronaviruses, suggesting potential for use in the treatment of Covid-19 as well as potential use to address future Coronavirus threats.”

Pfizer’s chief scientific officer Mikael Dolsten was quoted in the media saying, “Together, the two [oral and intravenous antivirals] have the potential to create an end to end treatment paradigm that complements vaccination.”

“Given the way that SARS-CoV-2 is mutating and the continued global impact of Covid-19, it appears likely that it will be critical to have access to therapeutic options both now and beyond the pandemic,” Dolsten said in a statement.

Pfizer was the first to hit the market with a vaccine for Covid. Could this new pill be another first for the company?
