Local environment conservation group Zibel is calling on locals to help them spot a nasty material that is invading Maltese waters: polystyrene/jablo. In a recent clean-up they found shocking amounts of this material and they now need your help to report more locations around the islands littered with it.

“A couple of weeks ago, we headed to Comino on our boat to clean-up the Santa Marija caves and the surrounding area, and what we found was truly horrifying the area was heavily littered with Polystyrene/jablo remains,” they shared on social media today.

“This type of waste is commonly used to create makeshift flotation devices or storage boxes for fishing purposes across the Maltese islands, and although we collected as much as we (and our boat!) could handle, there was still a significant amount that we had to leave behind.”

“As always, we are putting together an action plan to head back for the remaining jablo with specialised tools, and involving the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture with our results and recommendations.”

Here’s how you can help!

“Should you come across any similar waste across the Maltese Islands, please send us a DM or drop us a line on [email protected] with details and the relevant location co-ordinates!” they said. It’s a simple as that! So, if you spot polystyrene/jablo in our beautiful blue sea, contact Zibel and let them know. All it takes is a quick message!
