Hang onto your hats! Strong winds, dust and stormy weather expected to hit Malta on Monday
You might want to plan an indoorsy start to the week!

Malta is in for a blustery start to next week, with south-easterly gale force winds (Force 8) expected on Monday 19 January, and the chance of even stronger gusts at times.

The rough weather is being fuelled by a dramatic clash of temperatures — with a difference of over 30°C between eastern North Africa and eastern Europe — alongside a disrupted polar vortex and a fresh push of cold air over North Africa. Together, these ingredients are expected to trigger a powerful low-pressure system, which will move towards the west-central Mediterranean early next week.

As it approaches, strong winds and a desert sand haze are forecast to affect the islands, possibly reducing visibility and making the air feel dusty and uncomfortable – anyone with respiratory issues will want to make sure they’re not outdoors for too long.

Later on Monday, the weather is expected to turn even more unsettled, with rain showers moving in, some of which could be heavy and thundery – overall, definitely a day to be inside.

The unsettled spell may continue into Tuesday morning (20th January), with the chance of hail in some areas. If you have outdoor plans, it’s worth keeping an eye on updates, securing loose items, and allowing extra time for travel.

Do you have any travel plans on Monday?
