Malta may lack the vast sweeping forests of other European countries, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to find a peaceful escape under a canopy of green. While Buskett Woodland, created by the Knights of St. John as hunting grounds, is often the go-to spot for nature lovers, there’s another hidden gem in the north of Malta worth exploring – Miżieb!
Located in the stretch of land between Xemxija, Mellieha and Manikata, Miżieb Woodland is a relatively young addition to Malta’s natural landscapes. Many of its trees were planted in the 1970s, transforming what was once typical garigue – the rocky, shrub-dotted terrain that dominates much of the island – into a haven of green. Although there were debates over making the area an exclusive hunting ground, it has thankfully remained open to the public - just keep in mind that there may be hunters about.
For those craving a long walk, start your journey at the Xemxija Heritage Trail. Along the way, you’ll encounter Malta’s oldest carob tree – a majestic giant over 1,000 years old – and the Roman Apiary, a fascinating relic dating back over two millennia.
Once you reach Miżieb, the experience becomes a choose-your-own-adventure. Wander along the shaded, tree-canopied path or go for for the open, panoramic route. Both trails stretch over two kilometers, offering stunning natural beauty and a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
