On again off again! Malta's flaky electricity supply leaves another mark
This is really getting old now

The world may be in an energy crisis, but Malta’s current situation definitely stands out.

Tarxien, Birkirkara, Mdina, Naxxar, Mosta, Mellieha, Swieqi, Burmarrad, Sliema and St Julians were only some of the localities to have experienced yet another power cut around midday. While power has already been restored in some places, other localities are still waiting to get their electricity supply back.

powercut

Enemalta issued a statement related to Malta's most recent powercut: "With reference to the statement issued earlier, Enemalta plc is informing the public that the cause in the electricity supply interruption is due to a fault in the gas plant at Delimara" the Facebook post read. While Enemalta stresses that restoration of Delimara's power plant gas supply is expected to happen at any moment, they also confirmed that the island's supply is almost back to normal "in most of the affected areas, except for parts of Marsascala, San Gwann, St Julians, Mosta, Marsa, Marsaxlokk and Hamrun."

This is the umpteenth power cut to have affected the Maltese islands in so many days, with the disreptive supply being blamed on the damage done to the interconnector by a ship’s anchor. While the situation is being assessed, and engineers working hard towards a solution, intermittent power cuts are expected to continue for the foreseeable future until the interconnector is fixed.

Facebook

Maltese socials are currently flooded with posts related to the latest power cut, with many asking whether anyone has electricity and others resorting to profanities to express their frustration. One unlucky woman found herself in the unfortunate (and highly claustrophobic) situation of being stuck in a lift. Here's to hoping she has been rescued by now!
