Old-school boarding! Step inside Malta International Airport from 1992
Feeling nostalgic?

Francesca Vella

The Malta International Airport has taken us on a trip down memory lane by sharing a selection of photos from the year 1992, and they’re a delightful reminder of how much air travel has changed over the past three decades.

Though it’s only been 33 years, these snapshots are serving up serious retro vibes. Think chunky CRT monitors showing flight arrivals and departures rather than flatscreens, a viewing gallery that looks nothing like today’s modern terminals, and a façade that might leave younger travellers doing a double take.

One photo even shows the old staircase that once led to the departures lounge – completely unrecognisable when compared to today’s digital boarding pass gates. Back then, digital check-ins were non-existent. All travellers would queue up at the check-in desks, particularly because flying without a large suitcase was almost unheard of back then!

These snaps offers a glimpse – or a nostalgic reminder for millennials and older – of a time before low-cost airlines, sprawling duty-free stores, and high-tech security became the norm.

Do you remember Malta’s airport looking like this?
