Oh no! Could this cult restaurant in Ghar Lapsi be demolished to make way for development?
An iconic building in Ghar Lapsi could bite the dust soon, as a proposal to tear down Ta’ Rita restaurant to make way for development could go through. The application proposes a new guesthouse at the popular summer spot, but has already been met with objection by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage on the grounds that it could compromise the area.

A look back at Ta’ Rita
Every local kid has, at some time or other, visited Ghar Lapsi and had a bite to eat at the Lapsi View Bar and Restaurant, more commonly known as Ta’ Rita. The eatery, which brings fond memories to many locals, was established back in the 1930s, mainly to cater for the Royal Marines stationed in the area. It was later expanded in 1966 to its current state.

The new development
The proposed development will not extend beyond the area's existing footprint, however the heritage watchdog is concerned that the project will risk the area’s Natura 2000 status, impacting the existing cultural and natural features in the vicinity due to the intensity of the development.
The application was actually submitted four years ago and is still pending, but is now in the final planning process and is nearly complete. If approved, the area will see a three-floor complex, including underground parking, scuba diving shop, a restaurant, a multipurpose hall, a guesthouse with an outdoor pool, photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof and a play area for kids.
