Oh my! Floriana’s bombi bus stops & subway are in for one hell of a makeover
It’s been a long time coming

Caroline Curmi

The Bombi bus stops in Floriana are four of the most used stations in Malta, but they've sadly been in a dilapidated state for some time.

Over the years, many expressed their discomfort at having to pass through the Bombi subway, which connects two stations servicing buses heading towards Valletta and Southern Malta, but finally, that's all about to change, as the entire area seems headed towards a much-needed face lift!

Pictures of the proposed designs have been shared online and reveal plans for a new, naturally lit tunnel with ample cafeteria space and public restrooms. It is believed that the present tunnel will be be either replaced, closed down or remain disused, with a newer one to be built a few metres up the road to better connect bus stops Bombi 3 and Bombi 2.

An elevator connecting bus stop Bombi 2 to Bombi 4, allowing for increased pedestrian access (especially for those with mobility issues), is also part of the plans.

The project, which is still in its early stages, was designed to facilitate transits, promote the use of public transport and deter pedestrians from crossing the 6-lane arterial road. An Instagram post by Infrastructure Malta emphasised this point:"Safer & more comfortable facilities for passengers who stop in this area during their daily commutes #UpgradingYourRoadNetwork"
