It’s a sad day for lovers of the city hotspot.
The popular and iconic Charles Grech Café in Republic Street Valletta has served its customers their last drink, closing its doors yesterday evening.
“It is never an easy decision to move on and our team at the café will sorely miss our customers and daily regulars and the hustle and bustle of the café,” they wrote in a Facebook post announcing the news. We're gutted to see it go!
“We would like to say thank you to all customers, it has been a great pleasure serving you all through these years. We will definitely treasure the memories and look forward to serving you in our other establishments,” they say, referring to the Sliema Bistro and other outlets around the island.
Charles Grech in Valletta was founded back in 1881 as a tobacconist and bottle shop in Republic Street, selling the finest products on the market. The iconic spot even remained open during the trying times of World War II. In later years, it became synonymous with luscious wines, fine tobacco and smooth spirits, also delving into the world of gourmet cuisine.
The Valletta establishment has since evolved into an elegant café serving breakfast, mid-morning snacks and lunches by day, becoming a go-to wine bar by night. We'll miss you guys!
