New installation brings floating jellyfish to the streets of Valletta
This isn’t the first time that an installation has showered the historic capital in colour…

A brand-new installation has added a very welcome splash of colour to Valletta’s South Street.

Titled ‘Meta l-Bahar Iniggez’ (When the Sea Stings), this large-scale installation by artist Serhat Gür seeks to explore the connection between land, human society, and our rich marine biodiversity.

For this very reason South Street has been adorned with several giant, colourful jellyfish, floating over pedestrians’ heads.

“The sudden change in South Street is food for thought marking World Ocean’s Day and the importance the sea plays in our everyday life,” the Valletta Cultural Agency (VCA) wrote.

“This installation builds on the theme of the Valletta Green Festival 2022 – the protection of natural habitats and the effect this has on the flora and fauna of our islands,” it continued.

This isn’t the first time that an installation has showered the historic capital in colour…

Just last April, to mark this year’s edition of the Valletta Green Festival, an infiorata was set up within St George’s Square. The colourful installation was made up of a whopping 50,000 plants and was designed in a way to mimic the shape of a frog.

The infiorata sought to highlight the habitat destruction of the Painted Frog – the only amphibian present in Malta.

“The beauty of a floating jellyfish is often compared to a butterfly,” the VCA added.

“Appearing to be simple creatures by simply drifting in the sea, some species can be very complex and have been around for at least 600 million years,” it continued.

Next time you’re in South Street, make sure to keep an eye out for this installation!
