Misraħ il-Karmelitani Garden in Żurrieq has officially been inaugurated, transforming a previously tarmacked area into a vibrant green open space for the local community.

Covering around 1,150 square metres, the garden was designed to provide residents with a safe, accessible and environmentally friendly recreational area. Once dominated by asphalt, the site has now been landscaped with 40 mature trees and 1,620 shrubs, creating a greener environment for families, children and visitors to enjoy.

The project also incorporates several sustainable features. A rainwater collection reservoir was excavated beneath the site to capture runoff from nearby roads, allowing the collected water to be reused for irrigation. Solar-powered lighting has been installed throughout the garden, while benches and other amenities offer comfortable spaces for relaxation and social interaction.

One of the garden’s most distinctive attractions is a restored traditional Maltese luzzu that once belonged to the late Gianni “il-Lixxu” Tonna. The boat was donated to the Żurrieq Local Council in his memory and carefully restored before being placed in the garden through a collaborative initiative coordinated by the mayor and Joseph Farrugia “it-Timba”.

Project architect Daniel Tabone explained that the space was intentionally designed for multiple uses, including an area dedicated to yoga sessions and exercise activities, encouraging healthier lifestyles within the community.

Misraħ il-Karmelitani Garden forms part of 16 initiatives launched through Project Green’s Community Greening Grant scheme, aimed at improving urban environments and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
