Nest number three! Gozo joins 2025 turtle nesting season with a fresh arrival at Ramla Bay
Huge thanks to volunteers & ERA for making this moment possible!

Turtle nesting season in Malta just got even more exciting — Gozo has officially joined the 2025 celebrations with its first nest of the year, laid early this morning at Ramla l-Ħamra!

This marks the third nest overall for Malta this season, following earlier ones at Ġnejna and Għadira Bay. According to the Wildlife Rescue Team, a loggerhead turtle made a ‘false crawl’ on Ramla just the night before, raising hopes of a possible nest. Dedicated volunteers stayed overnight to monitor the beach – and their patience paid off! At around 2 AM, mama turtle returned and successfully laid her eggs.

Officials from the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA) were swiftly informed and arrived on site to confirm the presence of the nest. After ensuring the nest was safely secured, the turtle was checked for a microchip. Not having one, she was microchipped on-site, and given the name Johanna.

The Wildlife Rescue Team took to social media to thank volunteers Anna and Jessica for braving the graveyard shift, and praised the quick coordination with ERA.

If you'd like to be part of this extraordinary season and volunteer for nest monitoring or turtle rescue efforts, you can email [email protected] to get involved.

Keep your eyes on the shore for more exciting news!
