Migration season! Another flamingo spotted on the north coast of Malta
Malta is often a resting point for migrating birds, particularly the young ones that can’t keep up with the rest of the flock

Francesca Vella

Malta seems to be a flamingo hotspot right now as, just a week after one was taking a dip in Gozo’s Ramla l-Hamra, one has now been spotted on the rocky area on the north coast of Malta.

From the video taken by one of the flamingo’s admirers, the bird seemed quite at peace as it trod along the beach. It appears that the flamingo is still in its juvenile phase, both from its white and grey feathers, as well as its slight clumsiness and instability while walking.

Although flamingos tend to travel in flocks, the younger ones in the flock are sometimes left behind as they are unable to keep up with the rest, and stop to take a break in coastal areas.

Given that it’s now migration season, more young flamingos could be expected to show up on the islands’ coast. The public is reminded to keep a respectful distance when admiring such birds to avoid startling them. If you spot one, BirdLife Malta should be contacted on 79255697, for them to provide guardians until the bird is rescued or resumes its journey.

Safe flight, little one!
