Meet Twinkle and Mistletoe! Two adorable hoglets saved in Gozo are on the road to recovery
Two more young hedgehogs have been given a second chance at life thanks to the efforts of the Gozitan branch of Nature Trust Malta. Say hello to Twinkle and Mistletoe – two cute hoglets who are now safely on the mend.
Twinkle, a juvenile hedgehog, was found in Xlendi. While he initially appeared to be in fair condition, volunteers soon noticed that he was slightly underweight and limping on one of his back legs. A veterinary examination thankfully confirmed that the leg was not broken. The injury is believed to be muscular, and Twinkle is now receiving medication alongside daily hydrotherapy to aid his recovery.
Mistletoe, on the other hand, was discovered in Santa Luċija, Gozo, and was clearly far too small to survive on her own. Weighing just 59 grams, with no sign of her mother or a nearby nest, the tiny hoglet was brought into Nature Trust’s care. She is currently feeding well, growing stronger by the day, and has already stolen the hearts of everyone looking after her.
Nature Trust Malta reminds the public that all wildlife rescued by the organisation are protected species. It is illegal to harm them or keep them as pets in Malta, no matter how tempting it may be to adopt one of these adorable creatures.
The organisation’s trained volunteers hold official wildlife handling permits and are equipped to deal with rescue situations safely and responsibly. If you come across an injured or distressed wild animal, do not intervene yourself. Instead, contact the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta on 9999 9505, who will guide you on the best course of action.
Those wishing to meet Twinkle, Mistletoe, and other recovering wildlife can visit the Nature Trust rehabilitation centre at Xrobb l-Għaġin in Malta. The centre is open to the public, entrance is free (donations are always appreciated), and advance booking is required. For more information, contact [email protected].
Wishing Twinkle and Mistletoe the speediest of recoveries!
