Miss Kevin was found abandoned, while Howie was battling an infection.
Malta’s wildlife heroes have welcomed two tiny new faces into their care: Miss Kevin and Howie, the island’s latest hoglet rescues. Their stories are heart-warming and eye-opening in equal parts, reminding us why protecting Malta’s wildlife is so important.
Miss Kevin’s journey began on a busy road, where she was spotted alone with no mother in sight. Far too young to survive in the wild, she was swiftly taken in by the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta.
Safe, warm, and cared for around the clock, this little fighter is already growing fast and thriving. Her rescuers say she’s doing brilliantly, and will be released back into the wild once she’s strong and old enough to fend for herself.
Howie’s situation was more worrying. He was found frantically running in circles in a car park – dehydrated, starving, and struggling with poor eyesight. A veterinary check revealed that he was battling an infection and internal parasites, and rescuers are still investigating whether a neurological condition is behind his circling behaviour.
Despite the challenges, Howie is receiving ongoing vet care and lots of gentle attention, with hopes still strong for a full recovery.
All animals rescued by the Wildlife Rescue Team are protected species. It is illegal to harm them or to keep them as pets. Rescuers have specialised permits, training, and handling equipment, so if you find a wild animal in trouble, the best thing you can do is call the experts.
