March madness! An overview of the month that brought Malta warm winds and rainy surprises
March 2025 sure had a lot in store for us! A month that usually brings the first signs of spring had us experiencing winter 2.0. While we enjoyed some warmer weather, the month was also pretty wet – leaving us with a bit of everything in the weather department. Maltese Islands Weather provided their followers with a breakdown of what made March 2025’s weather do interesting – let’s dive in!
For the weather enthusiasts out there, you probably noticed something a bit different this month – southeasterly winds were everywhere! In fact, 18 days saw these winds, known as Scirocco, dominating the skies. Sciroccos are pretty common in spring, but this month, they definitely had more of a presence than usual. Why? Well, these winds come straight from northern Africa and rush into the Mediterranean when a low-pressure system is moving eastward. Think of it like the atmosphere's way of balancing itself out, but it means we get a burst of warmer, dry air, and plenty of gusty winds!
March wasn’t just breezy, it was warmer too. The average temperature was 15.8°C, which is about 1.8°C above the usual for this time of year. Not a massive difference, but enough to make those outdoor strolls a little more enjoyable. But things really heated up toward the end of the month!
On the evening of March 23rd, temperatures shot up to a toasty 26.8°C in what can only be described as a heat burst. This rapid temperature change from a comfortable 16.9°C to almost 27°C in just a few minutes took everyone by surprise! Not only did we get a sudden temperature jump, but humidity plummeted from a moist 92% to a dry 40% – talk about whiplash! And if that wasn’t dramatic enough, the wind kicked into gale-force in mere minutes, and we saw the month’s highest wind gust of 59.5 km/h. Classic heat burst behaviour, and definitely something those who experienced it won’t forget in a hurry.
Humidity was a constant companion this month, hanging around at a pretty high 81.4% overall. Many days had humidity levels creeping above 90%, which you may have noticed in your hair, joints, or car windows!
It wasn’t just moisture in the air, March was wetter on the ground too! A total of 78.0 mm of rain fell over 12 days in Gozo, making it the third month with more rainfall than average since September 1st. After a fairly dry start to the rainfall year, March’s showers definitely helped out. The bulk of that rain came from two major low-pressure systems sweeping across the area, one early in the month and another towards the end. So, while we had some sunshine, it was balanced by plenty of rain showers as well.
We can’t wait to see what April brings!
