Maltese architect leads Bali’s ‘Living Bridge’ project – with hopes to build a Green School Malta next
From Malta to Bali... and back again?

A bamboo bridge in Bali might not sound like news for Malta – until you learn it was co-designed by a Maltese architect, built by students, and could inspire something extraordinary back home!

The Living Bridge, unveiled earlier this month at Green School Bali, is the result of a two-year collaborative project led by Maltese architect Jonathan Mizzi, founder of Mizzi Studio. Aside from being a stunning structure, it’s also a global symbol of sustainability, community learning, and hope.

What started as a co-learning space for parents has now been reimagined with the help of students, educators, and local artisans. Built from over 300 heat-bent bamboo poles and packed with sustainable materials like terrazzo made from recycled glass, the bridge celebrates both traditional Indonesian techniques and modern green design.

It was even showcased at the ChangeNOW 2025 expo in Paris, drawing attention from global leaders, including actor and activist Natalie Portman!

Now, Jonathan is planting the seeds for something closer to home: a Green School Malta. His dream is to create a living campus where students learn alongside nature, featuring gardens, animal sanctuaries, an elderly care home, and spaces for cross-generational wisdom and creativity.

Mizzi Studio

‘Malta is small, but agile,’ he says. ‘We have the chance to lead with care, creativity, and courage. This is about building something beautiful for the future.’

He’s currently seeking landowners, educators, and changemakers to bring the vision to life.

Could Malta be home to the next Living Bridge?
