This Christmas, Maltese endurance athlete Zach Vella is turning physical challenge into social impact with an ambitious six-day running initiative in support of YMCA Malta.

Titled ‘6×60’, the challenge will see Zach run 60 kilometres a day for six consecutive days, from 26 to 31 December, raising funds and awareness for people experiencing homelessness in Malta.

The initiative marks the first major project under the athlete’s newly launched platform, Home Bound, which was created in response to the growing homelessness crisis locally. In 2025 alone, YMCA Malta received 307 new referrals for shelter, with all facilities operating at full capacity - highlighting an urgent need for additional resources and long-term solutions.

Through 6×60, all funds raised will go towards two crucial YMCA Malta projects: the development of a new semi-independent living apartment for six vulnerable individuals transitioning towards independent living, and the expansion of the YMCA drop-in centre in Ħamrun, providing more space for counselling, outreach services, and essential daily support.

Home Bound goes beyond fundraising. The platform actively supports the planning and delivery of projects, acting as a bridge between donors, YMCA Malta, and contractors, while monitoring each initiative through to completion.

‘This is a chance to make a real difference this Christmas,’ Zach said. ‘Even running a few kilometres or donating a small amount helps support the incredible work YMCA carries out every day.’

Designed to be inclusive, the 6×60 challenge invites runners of all abilities to join. Each run will be at an easy, steady pace, with routes shared daily on social media. One standout day includes a ‘backyard-style’ run of 10 km loops starting from Zach’s hometown of Mġarr.

Updates, routes, and timings will be shared on Instagram @homebound.mt. Donations can be made at here.

Join the cause to make a difference!

Well done, Zach!
