The Maltese Islands currently rank among the top 10 countries with the highest number of Covid-19 cases per capita over the past seven days, according to the US Centres for Disease Control (CDC). Malta is currently in sixth place.
Over the past week, which saw a spike in cases and four record-breaking days, 1,997 positive cases were registered, and a rate of 433.3 per 100,000 of the population was recorded.
Topping the list was the tiny Caribbean island of Saint Barthelemy, which has a small population of 10,000 and has a rate of 829.1 per 100,000. EU Member States Czechia and Estonia follow closely in second and third place with rates of 802.2 and 770.7, respectively.
These figures are calculated from data submitted to the WHO and based off a population estimate from last July.
Reportedly, according to the figures, Malta also ranked in 21st place when it came to the number of Covid deaths with a rate of 3.5 per 100,000. Here, Malta ranked just below the US’ 3.7 rate.
