Making waves! Malta featured at World Expo 2025 in Osaka with ‘Catch The Wave’ pavilion
Malta is making a powerful statement on the world stage as it takes centre spotlight at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, Japan, which officially opened on 13th April and will run until 13th October 2025.
With the overarching theme of ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives’, the Expo brings together countries from around the globe to showcase innovation, culture, and vision – and Malta’s participation is catching the eye of many!

Curated under the theme ‘Catch The Wave’ and designed by EM Architects, the structure captures the essence of Malta’s identity – a land where ancient megaliths meet futuristic ambition.
At first glance, the pavilion’s façade appears to be clad in traditional Maltese limestone. But a closer look reveals a dynamic digital screen façade that serves as a living canvas, projecting a continuous reel of Malta’s beautiful landscapes, iconic architecture, and contemporary achievements. This screen, acting as a time portal, merges visuals from Malta’s past, present, and envisioned future, drawing visitors in and making for perfect Insta-worthy moments.
The curvature of the digital wall takes inspiration from the sweeping forecourts of Malta’s prehistoric temples, while sharp-lined water features flanking the entrance reflect the imposing geometry of the island’s historic forts and bastions. The interplay of ancient and modern elements sets the stage for the immersive experience waiting inside.

The entrance – a dramatic slit reminiscent of Malta’s sea caves – adds an air of mystery and exploration, as visitors are invited to step through and begin their journey through Malta’s story.
Inside, the experience deepens with interactive exhibits, infographics, and a central circular audiovisual installation. This immersive centrepiece offers a 360-degree narrative voyage, combining archetypal imagery, sound frequencies, and storytelling that takes visitors from Malta’s ancient roots to its bold aspirations for the future.
Adding a unique cultural touch, the pavilion proudly displays a restored samurai armour, a gift from the Japanese government to Malta – a symbol of friendship, history, and respect between the two nations.

The building’s design also features a patterned waterproof membrane façade, inspired by the traditional Maltese tilework seen in older homes – an evocative nod to local craftsmanship.
As guests exit, they’re welcomed into a serene outdoor seating area, shaded by greenery, where they can unwind while enjoying tastes of Maltese cuisine and cultural highlights – a final reminder that Malta is as much about warmth and hospitality as it is about heritage and innovation.
The Maltese Pavilion at Expo 2025 aims to leave a lasting impression on visitors, illustrating how a small island nation can lead by example in creating a sustainable, innovative future. It celebrates Malta’s heritage, while looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, offering a vision of resilience and creativity that is deeply rooted in the island's past.
