Maestra moment! Bettina Muchmore makes history as first woman to conduct Malta’s Philharmonic Orchestra
Last night, Bettina Muchmore shattered a long-standing glass ceiling, becoming the first-ever woman to conduct the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra! This milestone moment took place during the opening night of Mużika Mużika, the much-loved festival celebrating Maltese song.
Best known as one half of the powerhouse sister duo The New Victorians, Bettina led the orchestra in performing a song she co-wrote and composed alongside her sister Philippa Naudi and fellow songwriter Lara Agius.
In an emotional social media post, Bettina reflected on this achievement, acknowledging that it has come far too late for women in 2025. She shared:
‘For me, this is about not letting perfectionism and a hyper-awareness of how far I have left to go, steal THIS moment. Having an idea and wanting to give it a shot. This is about conducting orchestras on TV with my 3-year-old daughter with chopsticks at home and now getting to do this in real life. This isn't Beethoven or anything near as complex as what other women are conducting all over the world – but it's a platform for young girls to see role models here in their own country at a local festival. And for me, that is more meaningful than ever.’
Her words resonate far beyond the stage, serving as an inspiring message for young girls who dream of stepping into roles that were once considered out of reach. This moment marks an important shift, proving that the baton is no longer just in the hands of men.
Congratulations, Bettina!
