Local kid with rare disease needs your help to fight the Corona pandemic
“If everyone does his/her part, you will help me and others with serious health conditions, stay safe and get through this.”

With everything that’s going on around the world and in Malta specifically, maybe people are worried for their health. And people like Nick want you to know that everything will be ok if everyone does their part to not let it spread.

“Hello, I'm Nick. I'm turning four this June,” he says on Facebook. Nick knows a thing or two about living in isolation for a while. “When I was born, I spent 3 months in isolation, in hospital, because I was born without a thymus. The thymus gland plays an important function in the immune system. It "trains" t-cells to fight off infections and viruses.”

“My parents' biggest fear was that I would have to live just like "the bubble boy", an American boy, born in the 70's with Severe Combined Immune Deficiency. He was protected from germs and viruses within the sterile environment of a plastic bubble.”

“However, gratefully, I can live a much better life thanks to modern treatment and medical interventions. Nonetheless, every winter, my family are terrified of the flu, considering that even the common cold can have serious consequences to kids like me who are immunocompromised. They protect me in every way they can. They vaccinate themselves against the flu every year. Even my brother and sister, I can see that they are really scared of needles, but they will do anything to protect me. In fact, they even move out of our home each time they are sick, just to keep me safe.”

Little Nick shares how the Coronavirus is putting a strain on his family. “Now this Covid-19 outbreak! I don't know exactly what's going on, but I can see that my parents are definitely not going through the best of times. I guess that very few of you can really understand what this really means to us. Unfortunately, this can lead to serious negative consequences.”

“Many of you have helped me and other children with other medical conditions last December, through Istrina, to be able to continue receiving treatment. For this, my family and I are forever grateful. This time, I am asking for a different kind of help. Please stay at home if you are feeling sick or have been abroad lately. I have been in, at home for over a week now, but my parents still have to go out to get us our necessities and my medications. If everyone does his/her part, you will help me and others with serious health conditions, stay safe and get through this. Let us not let it spread.”
