One man sadly died and two others sustained serious injures yesterday.
Following news of the tragedy that unfolded on Thursday afternoon, local adventure enthusiast Karl Hili penned a heartfelt statement on his Facebook page in the hopes of educating fellow thrill-seekers about the dangers surrounding Coral Lagoon.
In his detailed facebook post, Hili mentions how since discovering the site five years back, he has jumped in over 30 times. Despite the fantastical environment, he admits the area is extremely deceptive and through personal experience is well aware of the hazards involved in risking the three-and-a-half-storey jump.
“It doesn’t need to be too rough for it to be dangerous to get back up. You need to swim for a good 7 minutes and then climb up steep rocks which are very pointy. Since Ahrax is on the very tip of Malta, it isn’t in a bay and isn’t protected at all so the waves are stronger and they just bounce off the rocks giving you a double wave which can create currents and make it dangerous.”, warns Hili.
Coral Lagoon is a hidden gem and extremely popular among both locals and foreigners. Reaching the site involves a considerable trek along the Northern Malta coastline and the exact site is known only by locals.
Three years ago, two French canoeists required assistance from the AFM after large waves prevented them from exiting the cave at Coral Lagoon.
