Keep our islands beautiful: reduce waste in Malta & Gozo with these 3 easy steps

Malta is currently going through a waste evolution.

With increased awareness and a war on plastic, the reintroduction of old school ways needs to be adopted! Cami Appelgren is an ambassador for the safeguarding of Malta’s natural beauty - she pushes all residents and visitors to the island to join together and act as one and make a difference. Her presence in the environmental scene is striking, and her Facebook page Malta Clean Up inspires many to post about their daily waste-reduction achievements; creating a community that inspires change.

Reducing waste is the first step, and Cami has a few pointers on how to help safeguard Malta’s natural environment.

Cami's 3 easy steps:

Reusable shopping bags

Refuse the plastic bag! Take your own tote bags or larger carriers when you head off to the shops. Not only are you saving a few pennies every time you make a small shop, you’re also ridding the planet of a few stray plastic bags. Plus tote bags are way cuter to add to your daily outfit; men and women alike.

Alternative packaging

Our packaging options greatly affect our environment, so picking the right stuff makes quite the difference. Opt for aluminium, glass or paper wherever possible, simply avoid plastic and you’ll be on the right track. Even better yet, choose items without packaging!

Pick it up!

Waste accumulates on our streets and ends up in our beautifully blue seas, so if you see some litter hanging about where it’s not welcome, pick it up and dispose of it in the most responsible way. Don’t be shy - you may look like a crazy person picking up junk off the floor, but you know your head’s screwed on straight.

Malta Clean Up, Get Trashed Malta and Zibel make it a point to keep their Facebook pages up-to-date with all the national clean ups taking place across the island. This motivating activity will help keep your eyes on the prize and make sure that Malta does go through a waste revolution.
