June brought the heat! Last month brought unusual weather patterns and a sizzling start to summer in Malta
June saw a whopping 32.8°C – that's a full 4.3°C above the usual monthly maximum of 28.5°C.
What started as a pleasantly mild beginning to summer quickly turned into a long, hot stretch that left Malta and Gozo sweltering under the sun. By the 7th of June, temperatures shot above the seasonal average, and stayed there for 23 out of 24 days!
The average high for June is typically 24.2°C, but this year, the sun had other plans. The hottest day of the month came on Sunday the 29th, when temperatures soared to 32.8°C – a full 4.3°C above the usual monthly maximum of 28.5°C.
Even the nights offered little relief. On 21 out of 30 nights, temperatures remained above the average minimum of 19.8°C. The coolest moment of the month came just before dawn on the 1st of June, with a fresh but fleeting 14.6°C.
Malta wasn’t alone in the heat. A massive heatwave swept across Western Europe, pushing temperatures into the upper 40°C in places like Spain and Portugal. The entire Mediterranean experienced unusually calm weather, with almost no wind and still seas.
While that might sound like ideal beach weather, there’s a downside: the lack of wind and waves means the sea doesn’t mix, allowing heat to accumulate in the upper layers of water. Over time, this can stress marine life, disrupt reproduction cycles, and even lead to the spread of invasive species that threaten local biodiversity.
Warm seas also mean less cooling during the night, increased humidity, and even more fog or mist in the early morning or late evening – so if you've been feeling sticky and clammy even after sunset, this is why!
Only one day of rain was recorded last month – the 20th – when parts of Malta and Gozo saw localised afternoon downpours. Interestingly, Gozo received the lion’s share of the rain, recording 26.9mm in Victoria alone, compared to the national monthly average of just 3.2mm.
These showers were the result of a rare weather mix: warm, humid surface air clashing with a cooler upper atmosphere, triggering vertical cloud growth and extended bursts of rain in narrow pockets across the islands.
If June was any indication, summer 2025 is shaping up to be a hot and humid one, with the Mediterranean’s rising sea temperatures playing a starring role. Whether you're planning a beach day or a countryside hike, stay hydrated, seek shade, and keep an eye on those forecasts, because Malta’s summer heat is just getting started.
