Hold on to your trash! Garbage collection suspended as storms roll in across Malta & Gozo
Stormy weather ahead!

Francesca Vella

Heads up everyone! Garbage collection services will be suspended tomorrow, Tuesday 20th January, as Malta braces itself for severe weather set to hit the islands. Forecasts are pointing towards gale-force winds reaching Force 9, heavy rain and the possibility of hail, with conditions expected to worsen from tonight through to tomorrow afternoon.

Residents are being strongly urged not to put out black garbage bags or loose waste outside their homes. With winds this strong, rubbish bags can easily be blown into roads and public spaces, creating dangerous conditions for pedestrians, drivers and emergency responders.

The CPD has warned that unsecured waste could block streets, clog drainage systems and increase the risk of accidents during the storm.

Authorities are asking for everyone’s cooperation to help keep roads and pavements as clear as possible, especially while emergency and disciplinary forces are operating with increased staffing to deal with any incidents.

Garbage collection is expected to resume once conditions improve, with further updates to be shared by the relevant authorities. In the meantime, the public is being reminded to follow official guidance, avoid unnecessary travel and stay alert as the weather situation continues to develop.

Will you be bundling up inside tomorrow?

It's likely that sea travel will be delayed today, as most ferries across the island aren't in operation.
