Heroes of the moment! Civil Protection Department works through the night to keep Malta and Gozo safe during Storm Harry
CPD teams responded to multiple emergencies in the past 24 hours, including vehicular fires.
As Storm Harry battered the Maltese Islands over the past 24 hours, the Civil Protection Department (CPD) was on high alert, working tirelessly around the clock to ensure the safety of residents across Malta and Gozo.
Emergency teams responded to an impressive 42 tree obstructions, alongside six hazardous material (HAZMAT) spillages, six rubbish fires, and three vehicle fires. Crews were also called in to deal with a number of other dangerous situations, including two incidents involving billboards torn loose by powerful winds and an electrical hazard caused by the storm.
With severe weather conditions still posing risks, the CPD has once again urged the public to remain vigilant and follow essential safety guidelines:
- Stay indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary
- Do not call 112 unless faced with a genuine emergency, to keep lines free for those in immediate danger
- Avoid working at heights, including rooftops, balconies, scaffolding and other exposed areas
- Keep away from shorelines, breakwaters and coastal paths, as strong waves and sea spray remain dangerous
- Secure loose outdoor items that could become airborne
- If you must go out, drive with extreme caution, particularly in open or exposed areas
- Follow official updates and instructions issued by the authorities
Tallinja has also issued a notice stating that due to the storm and resulting road closures, diversions are currently in place on a number of bus routes. If you absolutely must leave your home, make sure to check the Tallinja App, which is being updated with real-time bus service information and diversion details.
A big shout-out goes to the CPD teams who worked through the night under challenging conditions to keep our islands safe.
Stay safe, stay alert, and look out for one another!
