Whether you’re walking through the bustling roads of Paceville or Mdina’s quaint passageways, there’s no denying that Malta’s streets are oozing with character.
Be it through the architecture surrounding them, the popular establishments they house, or the history they stand for, a walk along some of the islands’ streets is not unlike a stroll through a museum.
With that being said, here are eight of the most iconic streets around the Maltese islands.
1. Strada Stretta, Valletta
Coming in first on the list is none other than the ‘sinful’ Strait Street, more commonly known as Strada Stretta.
This narrow alley was infamously known by sailors all over the world for its drinking, partying and brothels. Nowadays, it’s experiencing a ‘renaissance’ of sorts, housing a plethora of popular restaurants and bars.
2. Merchants Street, Valletta
Speaking of Valletta, Merchants Street is another hugely iconic spot. It was famously known for its daily market that saw a never-ending series of stalls selling all kinds of products.
The market has since been moved but the street remains busier than ever.
3. Republic Street, Valletta

You’ll rarely ever see a road in Malta as busy as this one. The home of many centuries-old establishments and monuments, including the Courts of Malta, this street is busy pretty much 24/7.
There’s also no prettier sight in all of Malta during Christmas time, with Republic Street’s decorations truly being something to behold.
4. Republic Street, Victoria, Gozo
Yes, you read that right. This popular Gozitan street has the same name as the one housed within the Maltese capital. Republic Street also happens to be Gozo’s busiest street.
Guaranteed to be chock-full with traffic every single day, this street is the commercial centre of Gozo, surrounded by many traditional Maltese balconies to balance out the modern structures.
5. Tower Road, Sliema
This street has shops selling anything you’d ever need, making it heaven-on-earth for the shopaholics out there.
It also houses some incredible restaurants and a stellar promenade, offering the most stunning views of Valletta.
6. Bisazza Street, Sliema

Just around the corner from Tower Road is the famous Bisazza street – another beloved commercial hub.
This is one of the last remaining Sliema streets that is somewhat pedestrianised, making it the perfect spot for a weekend family outing.
7. St George’s Road, Paceville, Saint Julian’s
St George’s Road lies at the core of Malta’s nightlife capital, making it equal parts lively and chaotic.
You can rest assured that walking through St George’s Road on any summer night will introduce you to crowds of clubbers from all four corners of the world.
BONUS: All of Mdina
We couldn’t finish off this list without including Mdina.
At this former Maltese capital, you’re bound to come across one historic alley after another, ready to transport you back a couple hundred years.
