Following a vague European pitch for safe travel across Europe as well as proposals by local authorities to reopen travel between Malta and nine other countries deemed safe, the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses issued a letter to Prime Minister Robert Abela warning of the major repercussions such decisions would entail.
Emphasizing that people's health must win over the economy, the letter warned PM Abela that reopening tourism at an early stage in the pandemic could cripple the local health sector. It was also highlighted that a few thousand tourists over summer would not improve Malta's economy but was instead likely to generate a second wave.
Referencing the elderly and vulnerable who have been locked inside for the past two months, the MUMN also stressed that these people's quality of life would continue to deteriorate as they'd have to keep to their houses throughout the summer.
Do you think the travel and tourism industries be reopened?
