Heads up! Red flag raised at Blue Lagoon as winds stir rough seas around Malta & Gozo
A word of caution if you plan on some swimming today.
If you were planning a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Lagoon today, you may want to think twice.
The Emergency Response Rescue Corps has issued a red flag warning for Blue Lagoon in Comino, indicating dangerous swimming conditions due to rough seas and high winds. The alert was posted via their Facebook story earlier today, urging beachgoers to stay out of the water.
Meanwhile, the Malta Red Cross has shared the latest beach flag statuses across Malta. While no red flags have been raised on the main island, Golden Bay and Qawra Point are both flying yellow flags, meaning moderate hazards are present – swimmers should proceed with caution.
A red flag signals a high hazard, often due to strong currents, choppy waves, or rough weather. Swimming is strongly discouraged, even for confident swimmers, as conditions can change rapidly.
According to Windfinder.com, winds across Malta and Gozo have been picking up considerably since yesterday. Although forecasts suggest they will start to ease over the next 24 hours, it’s important to note that swells and underwater currents can linger, even after the wind dies down.
If you're unsure whether it’s safe to swim, don’t take the risk. Conditions may appear calmer than they actually are, especially in open waters like Comino. Always check local flag warnings, listen to lifeguards, and be aware of your surroundings.
Whether you're a local or a visitor, Malta’s beauty is best enjoyed safely – so when in doubt, enjoy the view from shore!
Are you hoping for calmer seas for your first swim?
