Heads up drivers! Għajn Dwieli Tunnel night closures scheduled for late September
Għajn Dwieli has over 100 years of history, and is now set for restoration.
The Bormla Local Council has announced that the Għajn Dwieli tunnel – one of the main gateways into the Three Cities of Cospicua (Bormla), Senglea (Isla), and Vittoriosa (Birgu) – will undergo restoration works later this month.
To allow for the necessary repairs, the tunnel will be closed nightly between 11pm and 5am from 22nd to 25th September.
Built by the Royal Navy around 1900, the Għajn Dwieli tunnel has served as a crucial link connecting Għajn Dwieli Road with the Three Cities, running beneath the imposing St Paul’s Bastion. During World War II, it even housed a rock-cut niche that was used as a clandestine chapel by Cospicua residents who remained in the city during heavy bombing raids.
Drivers heading towards the Three Cities during these dates and times will need to use alternative routes. Depending on where you’re coming from, one popular option is entering via the Notre Dame Gate between Birgu and Żabbar.
