Well done to all!

Lyndsey Grima

Malta’s national rugby team has achieved a historic milestone after a commanding 39-13 victory over Austria at the Ta’ Qali national stadium, earning promotion to the Rugby Europe Trophy - the second division of European rugby.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, Malta produced a dominant display from beginning to end in what was the country’s first-ever rugby international hosted at Ta’ Qali. Facing an Austrian side that had also entered the clash unbeaten, the Maltese squad rose to the occasion with an outstanding all-round performance.

The highly anticipated playoff had been described as one of the most important matches in Maltese rugby history, with promotion at stake, and the hosts delivered in style.

With this victory, Malta now advances to the Rugby Europe Trophy, taking another major step forward in competing regularly against stronger European rugby nations.

For a sport that often receives limited attention locally, the occasion marked a huge moment for Maltese rugby.

Maltese rugby has officially reached a new level.

Well done!
