What, no driver? Autonomous bus spotted in San Lawrenz
Specialised engineers have taken the bus on the road to map out the route

Is this an early sign of what public transport could look like in the future?

An autonomous bus has begun trial runs on Malta’s roads, starting with the small Gozitan village of San Lawrenz.

Specialised engineers have taken the bus on the road to map out the route, an important part of a six-month pilot project ahead of the potential launch of new driverless routes.

The testing phase is being carried out by Malta Public Transport, the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, and the University of Malta, as part of the Horizon Europe initiative.

Would you catch a ride on a driverless bus?
