Heading to Malta in 2019? A first-timer’s guide to travelling to the Maltese Islands
Things you NEED to know before coming.
Language, history, food and culture are just the start of all there is to know about the Maltese Islands. If you’re heading to Malta in 2019, here are a few things to know and look out for.
1. The use of the word mela
Probably the most commonly used word in the Maltese language with countless meanings, it’s a word hard to keep up with! Mela could mean anything from ‘of course’ and ‘so’, to ‘ok’ and ‘alright’. It might be confusing at first (and we don’t blame you), but you’ll get it. Eventually!
2. Basic Maltese words
Being in Malta, you’re bound to hear a Maltese word or two here and there. You can use words like bongu (good morning), caw (bye), grazzi (thank you) , and sahha (cheers) to really charm the locals.
3. Food bonanza
Traditional Maltese food is an absolute must-try and is genuinely delicious (and given in abundance)! Try pastizzi, Maltese ftira, gbejna (cheeselet), twistees (bacon-flavoured twisted crisps), Kinnie (a zesty soft drink), and bigilla (broad bean paste). They’ll have you licking your lips and fingers!
4. Must-visits
Malta and Gozo have a number of great spots for you to visit. Head over to Valletta, Malta’s capital, with different attractions, churches, and museums just waiting to be explored. Another must-see location is the medieval city of Mdina that has seen every possible battle, just like Gozo’s Citadel, that has been the target for various conquerors over the centuries.
5. Summer holiday heaven
If you’re planning on coming to Malta during the summer months, there’s plenty to do. Visit one of the many beaches around the gorgeous coast of Malta, hop on a trip to Comino’s stunning Blue Lagoon, and dance the (hot) night away at one of the many parties!
6. A hub for history, art and culture
Having been conquered by so many civilisations, Malta is the best destination for history, art and culture. We’ve got it all: pre-historic temples, medieval cities, Renaissance buildings, Baroque theatres and modern places, all waiting to tell their story.
7. Insane drivers
Just a heads up on this one – the Maltese are pretty insane drivers. So, you might want to watch out when crossing the street, or if you plan on driving in Malta, get ready, as Maltese don’t pay (much) attention to road rules!
This is just a small speck of all that Malta has to offer!
